Cressfield
Cressfield in the Hunter Valley is a picture of excellence in everything it does… from producing some of Australia’s top thoroughbred horses to a land-management plan that includes conservation. The Great Eastern Ranges Facilitator in the Hunter, Gabe Anderson, and President of the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association (and Cressfield Manager), Wayne Bedggood, explain the Hunter Valley Partnership and the conservation work being done on Cressfield.
Tobias Hayashi
When the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative went looking for great photos of wildlife to use on our website and in factsheets we were surprised to find some of the best photos on Flickr had been taken by a Canberra year 12 student. Tobias Hayashi’s beautiful photography show us how we can contribute to conservation in different ways.
Linking Landscapes 2009
The 1st national Linking Landscapes Summit was held at Kingscliff, New South Wales, in October 2009. The event brought together leaders in conservation and land management from across Australia to discuss large-scale conservation. The keynote address was delivered by Canadian Harvey Locke, one of the founders of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative and guest of the The Nature Conservancy.
MyRiveR
OzGREEN is a lead partner in the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative. OzGREEN recently ran the MyRiveR program in the Albury area. Albury students got their feet wet monitoring and evaluating the health of the Murray River, and talked with locals about their findings. Angela Baker and the team with from OzGREEN worked with students to develop plans to address their findings.
Friends of the Koala
Friends of the Koala is a voluntary group operating in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. President Lorraine Vass talks about the connection between habitat fragmentation and Koala health. Meet some of the Koalas currently in care.
Charlotte Stahl
Charlotte and Ron Stahl moved to the land in 1969, with the intention of clearing their property for beef and Sheep farming. After realising the land was better suited to producing native vegetation they developed a sustainable firewood business and started a wildlife refuge. Charlotte talks about a changing relationship with the land.
Andy Watson
Andy Watson's 1,200 hectare farm is north of Holbrook, in the Slopes to Summit region of the Great Eastern Ranges. Andy has worked with the Murray Catchment Management Authority and Holbrook Landcare to tackle salinity problems and improve the productivity of his land. Andy talks about the need to balance conservation and productivity, and the role big trees play in soil health.
Andrew Hicks
Andrew Hicks owns Annadale South, a 2,400 hectare beef Cattle property west of Holbrook in New South Wales. Andrew has worked with his neighbours and Holbrook Landcare to create a corridor along Ten Mile Creek, allowing birds to move more freely through the landscape. This is a great example of on-ground connectivity conservation, showing what people can achieve when they work together.
Slopes to Summit 'Wattle Day'
The Slopes to Summit priority area of the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative celebrated Wattle Day – 1 September 2009 – with a community event held near Albury. Local conservation organisations and volunteers came together to plant trees near the access point for a new wildlife bridge allowing Squirrel Gliders to safely cross the Hume Highway.
