Local Councils

Local Councils are New South Wales Government statutory authorities reporting to the Minister for Local Government. Local Government makes an important contribution to the Great Eastern Ranges through a wide range of activities.

31 Local Councils are found in the New South Wales section of the Great Eastern Ranges. Local Government is responsible for:

  • strategic planning through land use zoning
  • development control of freehold and crown land
  • enforcement powers for unauthorised land use

Local Councils carry out many activities that contribute to the conservation of natural habits that link landscapes and ecosystems in the Great Eastern Ranges. These include:

  • pest, plant and animal risk control measures
  • influence over land clearance patterns through incentive programs
  • management of local open space to restore remnant vegetation and recreate habitat
  • primary advocate for local community groups and interests
