Border Ranges: Georgia Beyer
Partnerships
Border Ranges Partnership Facilitator
My role has involved working with the Northern Rivers Regional Biodiversity Management Plan Steering Group to identify opportunities for the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative to help implement conservation activities and community engagement in the Border Ranges. This process has resulted in a range of activities being funded, such as: Indigenous Biodiversity Forums; contribution to environmental field days in 4 locations of the Border Ranges Corridor; contribution to in-perpetuity conservation covenant programs; and contribution to restoration funding programs for landholders in regional priority areas.
In the next 12 months I hope to develop a regional partnership between state, regional and local government natural resource agencies, non-government conservation organisations, universities, environmental consultants, Indigenous custodians and the community.
I work for the Nature Conservation Trust of New South Wales.
I have been working as an Ecologist for 10 years and have been involved in the development of forest policy for Northern NSW as a community representative. I have a professional and personal interest in all aspects of the environment; however my special interest is in the ecology of Gliders, such as Yellow-bellied Gliders and Squirrel Gliders.
I have been working alongside Kate Smilie, who has also been working on the Great Eastern Ranges. Kate has been working in planning and environmental legal and policy frameworks for 9 years and has been involved in the development of the Nature Conservation Trust covenant program for private land conservation in NSW. Her special interest is in bush regeneration and environmental restoration activities.
Both Kate and I have been involved in environmental conservation activities in the Border Ranges for all of our professional careers. The Great Eastern Ranges Initiative provides an opportunity to collaborate with other organisations and individuals that are interested in biodiversity conservation, to identify innovative ways to address threats to biodiversity, to improve community education, and to attract investment into regional conservation efforts into the future.
