Connect Kids – an interactive education resource for primary and early secondary students promoting cultural connections to biodiversity in the Great Eastern Ranges – has been nominated for a New South Wales Premier’s Public Sector Award.

The Award, which formally recognises and rewards outstanding performance and achievement by the NSW public sector, aims to recognise and promote excellence of service, projects and practices.

Creator Mark Fisher, Senior Threatened Species Officer in the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water’s Biodiversity Conservation Section, described the resource’s key objective as 'combining scientific and indigenous knowledge with an education curriculum that enables children and teachers to develop their own models of biodiversity management, connectivity conservation and connection tourism across the Great Eastern Ranges corridor in North East NSW'.

'The great point about the kit is its ability to build partnerships between indigenous interests in biodiversity, connectivity conservation and cultural education with the broader community.'

Wahluba elders Uncle Harry Walker and Bill Walker – together with the Bonalbo Central School – were part of a 6-month project in the Casino area to develop the kit, incorporating  Aboriginal Eeders leading connection walks in local schoolyards and on Community land.

The kit was launched on 11 December 2009. Copies can be obtained from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Phone +61 2 6659 8268.
