Referred to as the Big Sky Country, the New England Tablelands region is approximately 4.5 hours drive north of Sydney.

With its past steeped in bushranger and gold rush history, the New England Tablelands is traditionally a farming region producing cotton, wool, wheat and nuts, with a strong cattle and sheep farming history. Australia’s largest farm show – the AgQuip Field Days – is hosted at Gunnedah each year.

The New England Tablelands region offers a range of family and adventure activities and attractions, making it an ideal holiday destination.

Natural Highlights

The New England Tablelands region hosts around 17 National Parks which include stunning waterfalls, gorges and rainforests.

Oxley Wild Rivers National Park

Oxley Wild Rivers National Park is a World Heritage incorporating dramatic gorges and waterfalls, extensive wilderness, and wild and scenic rivers. It is home to Wollomombi Falls, which plunges 480 m over 2 drops. The Australian Bicentennial National Trail also passes through here.

Mount Kaputar National Park

Mount Kaputar National Park is the footprint left behind by a series of volcanic eruptions that moved across the area 17–21 million years ago.

New England National Park

New England National Park, spilling over the edge of the Great Escarpment, is a landscape of cliffs, World Heritage rainforests, fast creeks, occasional snowfalls and mist.

Washpool National Park

Washpool National Park consists of a landscape of steep gorges, clear waters and expansive World Heritage rainforest, protecting some of the most diverse and least disturbed forest in New South Wales, including the world's largest stand of Coachwood trees.

Werrikimbe National Park

Werrikimbe National Park is a World Heritage listed place of wild magnificence, incorporating rainforests, heaths, rushing rivers and spring wildflowers. This is a place containing high conservation and landscape values, an outstanding array of biodiversity and magnificent scenery.

  • Mount Kaputar, which at 1,200 m affords incredible views over the New England plains and is the highest point between here and South Africa.
