Protected areas of the Great Eastern Ranges managed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service include National Parks, Nature Reserves, State Conservation Areas, Karst Conservation Reserves and several historic sites.
The NSW section of the Great Eastern Ranges contains:
- 2 World Heritage Areas totalling 1.4 million hectares
- 4 of the 11 National Parks comprising the Australian Alps National Parks
- 46 wilderness areas totalling 1.75Â million hectares
- Numerous National Heritage areas.

NSW contains over 780 National Parks and Reserves. Many of these areas contain the most majestic and biologically-rich landscapes in Australia, and many lie within the rugged mountainous landscape of the Great Eastern Ranges.
These landscapes include massive clifflines and escarpments, deep gorges, undulating plateaux, mountains up to 2,228 m high, hundreds of large waterfalls up to 240 m high, alpine and glacial features, karst landforms and caves, and the scattered remains of ancient volcanoes cloaked in a wide variety of natural habitats.
