Along eastern Australia the ancient landscapes of the Great Dividing Range and the Great Escarpment are found – known collectively as the Great Eastern Ranges – consisting of tablelands, mountainous areas and undulating regions. In New South Wales 96% of the population lives within 100 km of the Great Eastern Ranges.

The 1,200 km section of the Great Eastern Ranges contains some the most visited tourism destinations in NSW, including mountain getaways, pristine beaches backed by escarpments, and hinterland hosting an abundance of wildlife and allowing a variety of natural experiences.

It doesn't matter where you live along the east coast, the Great Eastern Ranges are your backyard, a backdrop to many of our largest cities and town. The NSW section of the Great Eastern Ranges contains a great variety of Australia's most rugged, captivating and beautiful landscapes.

Opportunities for outdoor recreational activities abound, ranging from sightseeing by car to intrepid expeditions by foot into wilderness areas. Endless outdoor recreational activities are within easy reach, including:

• snowfields and wilderness areas in the Australian Alps National Parks
• the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests of Australia
• the favourite Sydney getaway regions of the Southern Highlands, the Hunter Valley and the Greater Blue Mountains
• pristine bushwalking, canoeing, rockclimbing and cycling along the length of eastern NSW
• some of Australia's most significant cultural heritage sites.
