The highway traverses a great diversity of coastal and highland environments including (east to west) the coastal plain, the Bega Valley, the South Coast Range (South East Forest National Park), the Monaro Tableland, the Snowy Mountains (Kosciuszko National Park), Blowering Reservoir and Tumut Valley.
