Overview
For 20 years WetlandCare Australia has been dedicated to protecting and restoring Australia's wetlands and inspiring others to get involved. Our founders had a vision for building networks of wetlands across Australia to provide the connectivity required for healthy functioning ecosystems that support life. As Australia's only dedicated wetland conservation organisation our reach has been extensive in moving that dream towards a reality. WetlandCare Australia has earned a reputation as an influential change agent and partnership builder through our solid track record in managing and delivering hundreds of projects across Australia that have resulted in improved wetland ecosystems and sustainable use. We are a not for profit company and registered charity, listed on the Australian Register of Environmental Organisations.
What we do
WetlandCare Australia continues to work extensively along the east coast of Australia including numerous sites within the Great Eastern Ranges corridor to improve the ecological integrity of this internationally significant habitat linkage. Our conservation goals for this region are:
Implementation of best practice management for wetlands and adoption of sustainable use of aquatic resources on private and public land;- Implementation of existing policy directions around no net loss for natural wetlands;
- Landscape scale recovery planning for threatened wetland species and endangered ecological communities;
- Promote the conservation of the regions unique wetland biodiversity;
- Wetland ecosystem services factored into decision making to improve their resilience against climate change; and
- Delivery of sustainable on-ground outcomes to improve the health and resilience of wetlands and their catchments.
What we have achieved
WetlandCare Australia’s has for 20 years focussed on engaging and building the capacity of the community, while working in strategic partnerships with Governments, Industry and Business. This has resulted in extensive on-ground action. In the past five years alone, WetlandCare Australia has conducted 287 wetland focused projects encompassing 50,000 hectares along much of the east coast of Australia. Additionally WetlandCare Australia has mapped and prioritised over 1 million hectares of wetlands and developed over 100 management plans to guide future on-ground works. We have engaged and supported over 15,000 volunteers, community groups, landholders and natural resource managers who have worked tirelessly with us to conserve, restore and sustainably manage functioning wetland ecosystems and their catchments across Australia.
