Overview

The Tweed Shire Council Natural Resource Management (NRM) section is responsible for managing, conserving and rehabilitating the natural environment of the Tweed Shire. This involves developing and implementing management plans and on-ground projects, and providing advice on environmental policies and procedures. The section has five key program areas: Biodiversity, Waterways, Coastal, Floodplains & Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainability & Climate Change. They manage approximately 3500ha of bushland reserve and support the community through an advisory service and grant projects that aim to increase the capacity of landholders and community groups to enhance biodiversity values and waterways health.

What we do

Tweed Shire Council awards Biodiversity and River Health grants to landholders, providing them with fencing materials to restrict stock from riparian zones and/or bush regenerators to undertake weed control and revegetation projects and concurrently to provide training for landholders. These grants are implemented on properties that will enhance biodiversity at a landscape scale and contribute to ecological connectivity. Council is also active in managing its own bushland reserves, raising community awareness of ecological issues and management, and is responsible for the on-ground delivery of numerous external grants though projects such as Tweed Byron Bush Futures, Tweed Coast Littoral Rainforest Restoration, Bilambil and Byrill Ck Riparian Restoration, Priority Action Statements (PAS) Implementation and Lower Tweed Range Endangered Ecological Communities projects all of which contribute to improved habitat quality and connectivity.

What we have achieved

In the past year our landholder grants projects have provided funding for 30 private properties. Works have included approximately 25ha of weed control, 5000 trees planted and 2km of fencing supplied. In addition, projects contributing to ecological connectivity include riparian vine weed control in the Tweed River catchment, cane drain revegetation projects and, in partnership with Bushland Restoration Services Ltd., implementation of Priority Action Statements (PAS) rehabilitation projects.
