Overview

The Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance (SBSA) is comprised of five major environmental groups, expert individuals and concerned community members.

The Bahrs Scrub Precinct (BSP) is an area of approximately 800 hectares south of Beenleigh, Queensland, and a potential biodiversity hotspot of dry rainforests and koala habitat.

Fast-tracked by the SEQ Regional Plan to accommodate 11,000 residents, the Precinct is currently under Logan City Council investigation. The Bahrs Scrub Precinct and vicinity is known to contain 450 plant species and unassessed wildlife species.

SBSA has identified up to 12 Endangered, Vulnerable or Rare flora species and five Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) species in the Bahrs Scrub Precinct surrounds, validating rejected Qld Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations for National Park status since 1981.

What we do

SBSA is presently involved in bringing to the attention of the public and to local, state, national and international government agencies the substantial potential flora and fauna values of the Bahrs Scrub Precinct (BSP), and to pursue recognition of the general value of vegetation as vital carbon sinks to mitigate catastrophic climate change and to defray future carbon costs incurred under future legislation. Further, since recent formal environmental studies have failed to reveal the full biodiversity/ecological values of the BSP, which would trigger appropriate conservation protection under State and Federal legislation, SBSA is encouraging BSP landowners to allow independent, comprehensive, environmental studies, and to report flora and wildlife sightings. SBSA is also investigating conservation programs at multiple government levels, including land purchases for preservation and regeneration, and the establishment of corridors and green infrastructure.

What we have achieved

At present, SBSA has collated 35 years of flora reports, established membership, local newspaper connections, a dedicated website and PowerPoint to serve publicizing of the Bahrs Scrub Precinct (BSP) environmental values. SBSA has conducted public events and regular members meetings, published regular media releases. SBSA has established a close liaison with the local State Member who has expressed her support for a conservation plan and facilitated a meeting to bring BSP values to the attention to the Minister for Infrastructure & Planning. SBSA also maintains contact with officers in Logan City Council (supporting three new satellite cities) to lobby for information and for independent scientist access to the BSP, during the investigation of the Precinct which may inform the Local Area Development Plan. SBSA is awaiting a decision on the application for a Council Enviro Grant to produce an information brochure on Bahrs Scrub values.
