Nature Conservation Trust of New South Wales
Border Ranges
Overview
The Nature Conservation Trust of New South Wales (NCT) is a not for profit organisation established under the Nature Conservation Trust Act 2001 to promote nature conservation on private land in New South Wales.
We endeavour to establish tomorrow's private reserve managers through buying, selling and protecting properties of high conservation value, and supporting the owners to maintain and enhance their land's ecological values.
We run covenant programs that provide Trust Agreements (conservation covenants) to landholders wishing to protect natural areas on their properties.
What we do
The NCT has three main functions. One is to purchase properties with high conservation values, prepare a Trust Agreement (conservation covenant) for each property to protect the values forever, and then resell. The funds from sales go back into the ‘Revolving Fund’ to allow new properties to be purchased and protected.
The NCT also enters into Trust Agreements with private landholders. The Trust Agreement is a legal agreement between a landholder and the NCT to protect a certain part of a property where important natural values exist. The agreement is attached to the property title so that the area under agreement is protected forever.
The third function is to support ‘private reserve managers’ with Trust Agreements to manage their areas under agreement.
What we have achieved
The NCT runs many covenant programs in NSW, and currently has 17 Trust Agreements in the Border Ranges region. Seven of these have been supported through the Great Eastern Ranges (GER) Initiative and provide security for native vegetation in important regional vegetation corridors. Another four Trust Agreements are in progress thanks to GER Initiative support, and they will also contribute to connectivity in the region.
