Environmental Futures Centre, Griffith University
Border Ranges
Overview
The Environmental Futures Centre is a research centre within Griffith University which combines science, innovation and experience to expand new knowledge and deliver effective environmental solutions in natural, production and urban landscapes. The Centre brings together a large number of committed and productive researchers from a diverse range of disciplines who share the common goal of undertaking excellent research of immediate relevance to critical environmental issues. Being located within the fastest growing region in Australia provides an opportunity to understand and address a range of ecological significant issues of relevance to urban and natural environments, farms and plantations.
What we do
Within the Environmental Futures Centre a broad range of ecological research is undertaken within the Border Ranges, by both academic staff and postgraduate students. A strong focus of the research conducted by the Centre is that of ecological connectivity at the species, community and ecosystem level. The primary research themes of the centre are: climate change and platform technologies, ecological restoration and management, biodiversity and conservation, sustainable production, environmental policy and governance, and aquatic chemistry and pollution research. These research themes are applied by the centre with a multi-disciplinary approach in order to enhance the understanding of ecological communities and sustainability issues in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.
What we have achieved
Research by the Environmental Futures Centre within the Border Ranges has contributed to the understanding of a range of species and their ecological significance. Past research projects have provided comprehensive information on the habitat services of a freshwater Crustacean Species as well as population assessments on a range of crayfish species, including one species on the IUCN Red List. Other studies that have taken place within the Border Ranges include population and disease ecology assessments of numerous frog species. These research projects have contributed considerable ecological knowledge across the connected landscapes in the Border Ranges of eastern Australia. As well as the species level, the Environmental Futures Centre has contributed to the understanding of fire management regimes within the Border Ranges, which is of significance to the ecological health of both private and public lands within this area of Australia.
