Earth Learning
Border Ranges
Overview
Not for profit, community based organisation focused on protecting biodiversity, enhancing community sustainability and building community environmental awareness and stewardship. Hands-on education initiatives promote appreciation that biodiversity and ecological integrity form the life support systems upon which we all depend.
What we do
Earth Learning is active in promoting and consolidating ecological corridors within the Border Ranges / Great Eastern Ranges. We work with and educate local community and landholders to protect our nationally and internationally significant biodiversity through high conservation vegetation buffer zones and weed control.
Earth Learning members have compiled a manuscript documenting all Rare and Threatened Plants of the Border Ranges. We seek funding to publish this as “Rare and Threatened Plants of Subtropical Eastern Australia.”
We network with NGO’s and volunteers to protect threatened plants, animals and ecosystems on both sides of the QLD/ NSW border, including Environment Defenders Office (EDO) and Richmond Birdwing Recovery Network.
Earth Learning has organised keynote speakers promoting the Biodiversity and Significance of Forests in the Border Ranges for World Environment Day including Dr Mary E White, Professor Janis Birkeland, Dr Don Sands and Dr Paul Taylor.
What we have achieved
Earth Learning has worked to restore and consolidate ecological corridors within the Border Ranges / Great Eastern Ranges with multiple properties now protected by Nature Conservation Trust of NSW conservation covenants.
Involvement in innovative community sustainability planning in the Tweed hinterland has lead to partnerships with local and state government. Earth Learning has received more than $30,000 to auspice coordination and support of local food industries, integrated trails network, solar energy arrays, local capacity for self reliance and improved response to emergencies. This Community Economic Transition Program is to be rolled out state-wide in NSW.
Community environmental and sustainability education activities at local markets and events.
Water quality monitoring through and liaison with local government bodies to install automatic rain gauges and river height monitors interfacing with BOM website to warn of local flood events.
A founding member of Earth Learning has been recognised with a Queensland award for her international promotion of Conservation Cooperatives.
